A Boot-Loader allows certain PIC families to be self-programmed via their serial port using their inbuilt capability to write to their own program memory.
The boot-loader code is programmed into the upper end of the program memory area and stays resident while the remaining program area is re-programmed. This enables the capability to install firmware upgrades without a PIC programmer, which can be useful for upgrading products in the field. It is also much quicker than using a conventional PIC programmer, taking only a few seconds to upload, so it is useful during firmware development where successive iterations can be very quickly tested.
We can supply solutions developed with this capability to allow us to provide ongoing firmware support for your application.
We can also provide custom PIC hardware solutions with the boot-loader built in, that you can develop your own firmware for without the need for a PIC programmer.
Upgrades are via serial RS-232 or USB interface on the target device, connected to a PC. The utility shown here is used to select and upload the new hex file.
